Only Bass Bites
October 28, 2026
Lucas and his wife joined me today, all the way from Colorado. He was hoping to get his first sturgeon and follow it up with some smallmouth bass afterwards. I only hoped that the fish would bite!
I made a long run in sunshine and temps barely above freezing, to our first spot for sturgeon. We were there for over two hours without a single bite but had two rods get hit hard. I guess the fish didn’t see the lines and just ran into them! I could have stayed longer, but I just wasn’t feeling the love from the sturgeon. Time to switch over to bass!
First cast into the bass and we were hooked up! Second cast and the same thing happened. I should have started with them, I guess! Either way, Lucas was now feeling the power of the bronzebacks that he had never caught before. I hit several spots and we managed to hook up in almost every one of them, but no real concentrations. Until our last one that is! I decided to go real shallow on a hunch and apparently it was a good one. It was here that Lucas had the most action for the day. He landed several good bass and missed several others as well. This place seemed loaded and we fished it until they bit no more.
We had limited time remaining in the day and thought we’d try for sturgeon one last time. I made another long run back in the direction we had come from, to an area that I knew held fish. After marking plenty of them, I set the lines for the last 30 minutes of our day. Too bad it never happened, but we gave it our all. Lucas and his wife endured some really cool temps on this sunny, fall day. At least it wasn’t freezing cold, windy or rainy! He may not have caught a sturgeon, but he did manage to get into plenty of quality smallies on one of the last days in October. Overall, a great day to be on the water!!
