I was back out again with Ron, Sam & Doc on a trophy lake for smallmouth bass this morning. What a beautiful day with sunshine throughout, and a light wind for most of the day. The air temps went into the upper 80’s and water temps were between 61 & 66 degrees depending on the area. It didn’t take long to begin hooking up, as we were about to find out. An average fish was above 4 pounds from the start of the day right up till the end of the day. Tubes, & small, light jigs accounted for the almost 40 smallies caught today with the largest going near 6 pounds. There were a few fish over the 5-pound mark, but most were 4 to 4.5 pounds. Most of these large smallmouth were caught & released in 4 to 12 feet of water. All in all, a great day for really big fish today!!!

I fished with Ron, Sam & Doc today on Lake Memphremagog for smallmouth bass. They were really hoping for a top-water bite, but the weather lately had been just shutting the fish down on the surface. The day began just like all the others, misty rain! Air temps were 55 degrees and the water temps were around 60 degrees. No wind made the morning fishing pleasurable as we caught on the usual soft plastic jerk-baits. A few fish began to hit the surface prop baits also as Doc quickly proved to us. During the afternoon we had to slowly crawl grubs and tubes in open water to get the fish to bite as nothing was going on in the shallow water at all. Later in the afternoon, the fish finally began hitting the top-water presentations and just about every cast had explosions. The sunshine and 80 degree temps had the fish active and we were in heaven. Water temps warmed to over 65 degrees causing the lake to come alive. Many more bass were take on surface lures by all before we decided to call it quits around 7:30 PM. All in all a great day as both the fish and the weather finally cooperated. Once the clouds moved out, the skies just lit up with sunshine making the fishing absolutely spectacular!!! Close to 100 bass were caught & released today!

I fished with Jim & James these past 2 days on lake Memphremagog for smallies. The weather sucked, but the fishing was all right. Saturday saw rain falling throughout the entire day under really overcast skies. Water temps were around 60 degrees and the air temps fell to 53 degrees during the day. There was a wind of 10 knots from the north that chilled the air as we fished. The fishing was rather slow with all the rain staining the water, but we managed to get into 20 or 25 smallies up to 3.5 pounds, all on soft jerk-baits and grubs. Sunday saw overcast skies once again with air temps topping out at 55 degrees. Fortunately, the rain never really fell until around 3:00 PM allowing us to fish effectively. Once again, the soft plastic jerk-baits accounted for the majority of smallmouth bass caught up to 3.5 pounds once more. With all the cool weather and rain we have received, the water temps fell to 55 degrees in a few areas. These fish were all holding in 8 to 12 feet of water and some even deeper! The winds were blowing at 15 knots from the N/NE causing 2 to 3 foot waves later in the day. Over 60 smallies were caught today as the action improved over yesterday’s total catch. All in all, a great day on the water!!!

Jay & his wife, Kim joined me today on 2 different lakes. We fished one body of water in the morning for larger bass & the other one in the afternoon for numbers. Kim hadn’t fished before, so it was great to see her enjoy herself so much just catching all kinds of acrobatic smallies. By the afternoon, she was fishing like she had done it most of her life! The weather started out with heavy fog, but soon cleared to a beautiful sunny day. Air temps reached into the upper 70’s with light & variable winds and the water temps were up to 65 degrees. Kim’s first hook up came as the largest bass of the day. It went over 4 pounds and was caught on a super fluke soft plastic jerk-bait. Most of the 40 to 50 fish fell victim to the same baits with a few others being taken on jigs too. It was nice to see the fish a little more active today, but the water clarity was still pretty high & dirty. The first lake of the day produced 3 fish in the 4-pound range and the second one produced over 30 smallies ranging from 1 pound up to over 3 pounds. All in all, a great day full of smallmouth bass action!!!

Today I had the pleasure of fishing with Fred & Patrick on Lake Mempremagog for smallmouth bass. The morning began wet & humid with heavy rain falling and air temps around 64 degrees. Water temps were over 65 degrees at the first area we fished and the winds were almost non-existent. It didn’t take long before Fred was hooked up and Patrick soon after as well. Most of the day was spent throwing soft plastic jerk-baits to aggressive smallies in the shallows. There were over 50 bass caught up to 3.5 pounds and almost as many lost too. This was to be a quantity type day as both Fred and Patrick left with sore arms from all the hook sets they had to apply throughout the day. All in all a great day regardless of what “Mother Nature” had dealt us!!
